Do I need an F-attachment?
An F-attachment (the trigger) gives you alternate slide positions and extends your low range below the natural tenor. If you are playing in any kind of ensemble beyond beginner level, you will want one eventually. Pure beginners are perfectly fine starting on a straight tenor.
What bore size suits my playing?
Small bore (.500 inch) trombones are lighter, more agile, and the standard for jazz and lead playing. Medium-large (.525 inch) is the all-rounder. Large bore (.547 inch) is what you reach for in orchestral, symphonic band, and serious classical work, where the fuller, darker sound is needed. Pick the bore size that matches the music you actually play.
What separates a pro trombone from an intermediate one?
On a serious professional trombone you get a more responsive slide, better-balanced weight, tighter intonation across the range, and a sound that projects without becoming brittle in fortissimo. The leadpipe and bell construction are usually higher grade, and the slide is hand-fitted. The difference is most obvious once you are playing in a section.
