Oboes for sale in Malaysia

Oboes barely exist on the Malaysian secondhand market. Most stay with their owners for life, or get shipped overseas when they do not. So when one passes through us, we make a point of getting the photos, the service notes, and the condition rating right. If you are shopping for an oboe locally, you already know how rare a listing like this is.

Oboe-specific questions

Why are oboes so expensive?
Oboes have more keywork than almost any other woodwind, and the keywork has to be precise enough that the smallest leak ruins the response. Most of the manufacturing is hand finishing, the bodies are carved from grenadilla wood (which is expensive and slow to source), and the regulation is meticulous. A good oboe costs what it costs because of how it is made. The flip side is that a properly maintained oboe lasts decades.
How important is recent servicing for a pre-owned oboe?
It is one of the most important things about the listing. Oboe pads and screw adjustments are sensitive, so service history is worth knowing about. We note what we know about each oboe's service history on the listing, and we can recommend a trusted technician if you would like a tune-up arranged.
What is the difference between a student, intermediate, and professional oboe?
Student oboes (e.g. Buffet 4002, Yamaha 241) usually have plastic or composite bodies and simpler keywork, which keeps the price down and durability up. Intermediate oboes step up to grenadilla wood and a more complete key system. Professional oboes add the full conservatoire keywork (third octave key, left F, low Bb resonance, etc.) and the finest hand-finishing. Most serious students settle on a good intermediate and stay there for years.
