A different kind of instrument shop

BrassWind Exchange is a curated marketplace for brass and woodwind instruments in Malaysia. Every instrument is personally inspected, honestly graded, and photographed properly before it goes on the site. No mystery listings. No blurry phone photos. No guesswork.

The shop is run by a working musician (a French hornist), which means the listings are written by someone who plays, not someone selling. If a horn needs a service, we say so. If a clarinet's pads are sketchy, that's in the listing. If a price is high because the instrument is rare in Malaysia, we explain why.

How we work

Every listing is hands-on first

Before an instrument goes on the site, we play it. Then we test the mechanical bits properly: every valve and slide, every key and pad, the slide action on trombones, the leadpipe response on trumpets. We only accept instruments in good playing condition, and any service needs are noted in the listing. If you would like a tune-up arranged before or after buying, we can recommend a trusted technician.

Photos that show the truth

We use proper lighting and shoot every angle that matters. If there's a dent, scratch, or lacquer wear, you'll see it in the photos. Our goal is that you should be able to make a buying decision from the listing alone, even before you come to try the instrument.

Consignment, not buy-and-flip

Most instruments on the site are consigned by their previous owners. We handle the photography, the listing, the buyer enquiries, and the tryouts. We only get paid when the instrument sells. That's why we're picky about what we accept.

Tryouts, shipping & condition grading

How tryouts work

Our main location is around the Sri Petaling area in KL. That is where most tryouts happen, by appointment. We can also arrange to meet at a secondary spot in Sunway when that is more convenient for you. For anywhere else, WhatsApp us and we will figure something out together.

Bring your own mouthpiece, reeds, or anything else you would normally play with. The tryout should reflect how you would actually use the instrument, not how someone else's mouthpiece sounds on it.

If you cannot make it to KL at all, we can sometimes arrange a video call where we play the instrument while you listen. It is not the same as a real tryout, but it helps. Mention it when you message us.

Shipping across Malaysia

We always prefer to hand the instrument over in person, at our location in Kuala Lumpur. A real tryout, a chance to talk through the instrument, no shipping risk. That is always our first option.

If you cannot make it to KL, we can arrange shipping. We use J&T, Pos Laju, or Lalamove for larger items. Smaller instruments (clarinets, flutes, mutes, accessories) ship with standard couriers. Larger items (euphonium, tuba, larger horn cases) usually need a higher-tier service and the cost goes up accordingly. WhatsApp us with your delivery address and we will get you a quote.

We pack carefully. Most instruments arrive within 1 to 3 working days within Peninsular Malaysia, longer for East Malaysia.

How we grade condition

Every instrument gets a condition rating out of 10. The rating covers four things together: cosmetics (dents, scratches, lacquer or plating wear), mechanical function (valves, slides, keys, pads), playability (response, intonation, tone production), and any service history we know about.

10
New / Demo
Unplayed or barely played. No marks anywhere.
9
As-new
Played briefly, immaculate, no service needed.
8
Excellent
Light cosmetic wear, mechanically perfect, ready to play.
7
Very good
Visible wear, may have had service work, plays well.
6
Good
Notable wear or service may be needed soon, but plays well for the price.
≤5
Project
Anything below 6. We rarely list these and always flag them clearly.

The grading is done by a working musician, not a salesperson. If we mark something 8/10, it really is an 8/10.
