Open hole or closed hole?
Closed hole (plateau) is standard for beginners and easier to play in tune from day one. Open hole (French style) is what advancing and professional players use, because it enables extended techniques (like pitch bends and quarter-tones), encourages better hand position, and gives a slightly more open response. If you are past the early years, you are probably ready for open hole.
Does the headjoint material really change the sound?
Yes, noticeably. Nickel silver headjoints are bright and projecting, and feel light. Sterling silver headjoints are warmer, more nuanced, and respond to a wider dynamic range. Solid silver, gold, and platinum bodies extend that further but at significant cost. The headjoint matters more than the body when it comes to sound.
When is it worth stepping up from a beginner flute?
When the instrument starts holding you back rather than helping you. That usually shows up as a thin tone, intonation that is hard to manage, and keys that feel imprecise.
