French Horn-specific questions

Single horn or double horn?
A single horn plays in one key (usually F or Bb), while a double horn combines both with a thumb trigger. Most school programmes start students on F single horns, but anyone moving toward serious playing eventually wants a double. The wider range and the better intonation options across the registers make double horns the standard for orchestral and chamber work.
Is a pre-owned professional horn worth more than a new student horn at the same price?
Almost always yes. A well-kept pre-owned Alexander, Yamaha, or Cornford will outplay a new student horn in build, sound, and resale value. Pre-owned horns are also already broken in, so the slides and rotors move freely from day one. The only catch is making sure the horn was actually well-kept. That is what our condition notes are for.
How do Alexander, Yamaha, Briz, and Cornford compare for a serious player?
Alexander is the orchestral standard in Europe and a reliable benchmark. Yamaha is the most consistent off the production line and very forgiving to play. Briz is excellent value for performance level and worth knowing about if you have not tried one. Cornford is hand-built in small numbers and aimed at players who want something with character. We will talk you through the differences if you ask.
